Analyzing the new PS5 controller, DualSense

Sony has officially revealed the new PS5 controller, DualSense, and I’m seeing quite a few similarities to the DualShock 4. But, it also has some differences that make it similar to it’s rival, the Xbox controller.

Other than the PS5 specs being revealed not long ago, there hasn’t been many news regarding the PS5 other than its release in Holiday 2020. But now, the new PS5 wireless controller, DualSense, has been revealed, and I have some thoughts on it. Most of them are good, of course, considering I don’t hate the design. However, I can’t give my full thoughts on it since I haven’t actually tested the controller to see how it feels playing games with it. So, my analyzation on the controller is entirely based on its design.

First thing I did was compare its physical appearance to the DualShock 4, which is the controller we all play with on the PS4. All the buttons mostly seem the same since they’re all in the same location. But, the DualShock 4 is definitely a bit slimmer compared to the DualSense, at least in appearance. The DualSense definitely seems a bit bulkier in almost every aspect. The handles look both wider and a bit longer, but I won’t exactly know until I have it in my hands. Some other distinctions include the tops of the controllers. The DualShock 4 is flat and mostly a straight line at the top of it, but the DualSense is more rounded out. As for the touch pad, it’s definitely wider and the outside lines are diagonal rather than straight down.

Other than those physical differences, I can’t really point out any others. There seems to be a variety of new features being implemented though, which I’ll discuss down below.

Haptic feedback provides more powerful senses while you’re playing. The best example I can give is you pulling an arrow on a bow and feeling the tension and resistance that comes with it. I guess it’ll feel similar to vibrations when shooting a machine gun in any shooting game. There’s also adaptive triggers, which players will feel while pressing down on them.

Some other notable changes include increased battery life, changing the “Share” button to “Create,” and improving the grip of the controller. Head over to Charlie Intel for more details.

Again, this is based on what’s already announced and what I can see from images (feel free to see the images in the link above). I’ve seen some say it looks more like an Xbox controller, and I can definitely see it. Then again, I don’t see how it’s a bad thing. As long as the controller feels right when playing, then I’m all for it.

Overall, I’m excited to see what’s next for the next generation of PlayStation.
